A P1.0 M project funds was turned over by DOST VIII Regional Director, Engr. Ernesto M. Granada, to the Provincial Local Government Unit of Samar (PLGU-Samar) on October 26, 2021 thru a simple turn-over ceremony held at the Office of the Governor, Capitol Building, Catbalogan City. The assistance is for the establishment of a processing plant for the iodine-rich drinking water, dubbed as “Tubig Talino” for the general public and especially the iodine deficient vulnerable group. The technology to be transferred was developed by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) to prevent iodine deficiency disease (IDD) in the country. Iodine- Rich Drinking Water or tubig talino is made by mixing purified or ordinary potable water and Water Plus I2. This can be used in nutrition intervention programs, disaster relief packs and other health or civic projects.

The tubig talino project will be established in two (2) districts of Samar, 1 in Calbiga and another 1 in Calbayog City. The SIRAK Kabataan (SIRAK, shine in English) that stands for Sama-samang Itaguyod ang Responsableng Aksyon ng Kabataan) together with the project focal person to be deployed by the PLGU, will take the lead in the implementation of the project and ensure the daily operation of the facility. This is the second project of the provincial government (first was the processing of FNRI complementary baby food) that seeks to improve the health and alleviate the malnutrition prevalence in the province especially those belonging to vulnerable group. Advancing in technology and innovations, the DOST is steadfast in its commitment to deliver and make these technologies work for the maximum benefit of all Samarnons.

The project was in coordination with the 2nd District Congressional Representative, Hon, Sharee Ann T. Tan, who is fiercely fighting the malnutrition problem not only in her district but the whole province of Samar.

Director Granada personally turned over the check to Samar Provincial Governor, Hon. Reynolds Michael Tan, as witnessed by Mr. Jhunlie Escala, Provincial Youth Development Officer (PYDO), Mr. Michael Cristobal, Public Employment Service Officer (PESO) and Ms. Ysabel Karla Aquino, Sirak Kabataan focal person.
