The Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) and the Department of Science and Technology VIII (DOST VIII), thru its Southern Leyte Provincial Science and Technology Center, in cooperation with LGU-Tomas Oppus, recently conducted a webinar on coconut processing technologies on May 18, 2021 as part of the Grants-in-Aid (GIA) project being implemented in the municipality of Tomas Oppus, Southern Leyte.

Due to the pandemic, the resource speakers from the ITDI Food Processing Division, Mr. Bienvenido B. Flores, Jr. and Ms. Kristine Ann S. Dela Cruz, only conducted a lecture on coconut processing which includes virgin coconut oil processing using modified wet process, processing by-products from VCO, vinegar processing using acetator kit, and buko pie and other coconut-based products.

Fifteen participants coming from the two women’s groups in Tomas Oppus, the Cambite Rural Improvement Club and Women Workers Livelihood Association (CARICWWOLA) and the San Antonio Rural Improvement Club (RIC), attended the said webinar. Representatives from the 2021 GIA beneficiaries in San Ricardo, Southern Leyte also joined the webinar via Zoom as their project is also on accelerated coconut vinegar processing.

The LGU-Tomas Oppus, thru its Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator Mr. Edmar T. Tambis, in his closing remarks expressed its gratitude to DOST for the opportunity given to the women’s associations in the municipality. The hands-on training will be conducted later this year.
